Adding -ing to Verbs


Adding -ing to Verbs
+ ing
                                    For most verbs, just add –ing to the base form of the verb.
                                                            sleep – sleeping               talk – talking
– e + ing
            If the base form ends in a single -e, drop the -e and add –ing.
                                    live – living                              write – writing
ieày + ing
            If the base form ends in –ie, change the –ie to –y and add –ing.
                                    die – dying                          tie – tying
x2 + ing
            If the last 3 letters of the base form are consonant-vowel-consonant and the stress is on the final (or only) syllable, double the final consonant and add –ing.
                                    split – splitting                          stop – stopping

                                    admit – admitting                   begin – beginning
                                                (Compare stress not on final syllable:  listen – listening)

            Do not double the final consonants -x, -w, or –y.
                              fix – fixing           plow – plowing                 obey – obeying

Form: S+ am, is, are + V-ing
  • Actions taking place at the moment of speaking:
Mary is at home now. She is watching a film.
  • Temporary actions, happening around the moment of speaking:
Sarah is studying for a test these days.
  • Actions already arranged to be done in the future:
Jill is flying to Rome next week.
  • Changing or developing situations:
Students are becoming more and more interested in history.
  • With always to express irritation:
She is always taking my things
